Let a be a natural number. Suppose that a gives a remainder of 38 when divided by 54; a gives 14 and a remainder r when divided by 18. What is the value of a+r? Khi chia số tự nhiên a cho 54, ta được số dư là 38. Chia số a cho 18, ta được thương là 14 và còn dư r. Hỏi giá trị của a+r?

From the first division, we formulate the relation as A= 54L+38, Where L is some integer. The second relationship gives A=18 × 14+ R with r ∈ n and $0

A=54x + 38=18 × 3x + 18 × 2 + 2=18(3x + 2)+2

Hence R=2 and A= 18 × 4 + 2= 254

Answer is: A + R=256
